Technical University of Sofia

A successor to the Higher Technical School in Sofia which opened doors in 1942 and which was renamed to State Polytechnic in 1945, the Technical University of Sofia is considered to be the first higher technical school in Bulgaria. It laid the foundations of four different higher institutes of education that exist to the present day. These are the Institute of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, later renamed to Higher Institute of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, now known as the Technical University of Sofia, the Civil Engineering Institute (now known as the University of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodesy), the Institute of Chemical Technologies and Metallurgy (now known as the University of Chemical Technology and Metallurgy) and the Institute of Mining and Geology (now known as the University of Mining and Geology), all established in 1953.

For more than 66 years the University has been preparing specialists in the field of engineering. In this period over 100 thousand engineers have graduated from it and have found jobs in their professional fields both in Bulgaria and abroad. The structure of the Technical University of Sofia includes 14 faculties, several departments, one college and other units where students are trained and scientific research is conducted. The University has a branch in the city of Plovdiv with two faculties and a college and also an affiliated unit in the town of Sliven comprising one faculty and one college.

Over 800 highly qualified lecturers train the students in all educational-qualification and academic degrees: Professional Bachelor, Bachelor, Master, and PhD. The educational process provides high quality professional and language training which makes for its international recognition. All degree courses are accredited and continue to be part of the accreditation cycle of the National Evaluation and Accreditation Agency.

Together with the instruction in Bulgarian language, the University also offers a number of courses in German, English or French, and, apart from the Bulgarian students, more than 1400 foreign students study at the University as well. The credit transfer system and the opportunities which the Erasmus Programme offers create conditions for students to study in a number of well-known universities which the Technical University of Sofia actively cooperates with.

The perfectly equipped laboratories of the Technical University of Sofia guarantee the high quality training of the students and PhD students in the fields of computer and communication technologies, electronics, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, power engineering, transport technologies, management and business administration. An important role for increasing the level of teaching, scientific and applied research activities of the Technical University of Sofia is played by the University's cooperation with large transnational companies such as Siemens, Eriksson, Microsoft, Daimler/Benz, etc.

There are preconditions for a rich and meaningful social life. The University has up-to-date educational facilities, libraries, students' hostels, canteens, sports complexes, an in-doors Olympic-size swimming pool, tennis courts and sports halls, seaside and mountain recreational homes.

The Student Council is actively engaged in useful and interesting activities. Through this body the students participate in the management of the University and protect their interests, establish connections with national and international students' organisations, organise cultural and sports events. The Career Centre plays a significant role in bringing together the business, the academic community and the students. So far more than 4500 students enrolled in different degree courses taught at the University have registered there.

The Continuing and Professional Education Centre (CPEC) with the University provides additional, specialised and professional training. It is open for students from both the Technical University of Sofia and other universities, as well as for people who are willing to obtain a vocational qualification or additional professional training.

The Technical University of Sofia enjoys close working relationships with more than 50 universities in Europe, Asia, North America and Africa. The University is a member of prestigious European and world organisations and participates in various projects under EU, UNESCO and NATO programmes. Owing to the diversity and high quality of the education it provides and the research activities it carries out the Technical University of Sofia is among the leading universities in the common educational and research area of united Europe.
