American University in Bulgaria
The American University in Bulgaria was established in Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria, on November 1, 1991, through the joint efforts of USAID, the Open Society Institute, and the Bulgarian local and national government. The intent of the founders was to establish a rigorous, high quality university that could educate a new generation of leaders to assist the newly independent Bulgaria to develop economically, politically, and socially.
Today, AUBG is a selective, residential, liberal arts institution based upon the classic American model. The University offers majors and minors spanning the traditional core liberal arts fields, as well as journalism, computer science and business. We believe that the campus living-learning experience offered by American liberal arts institutions provides young men and women with the critical thinking skills, the personal qualities, and the habits of mind that will best prepare them for leadership in the 21st century.
The mission of the American University in Bulgaria is to educate students of outstanding potential in a community of academic excellence, diversity, and respect and to prepare them for democratic and ethical leadership in serving the needs of the region and the world.
